Living In Ascot
Why live in Ascot
There's more to Ascot than horse racing and hats. This relaxed and leafy Berkshire town is one of the most attractive locations in the UK. A rare example of a peaceful setting within easy reach of London, Ascot is an idyllic town that charms at a gentle canter.
Of course, Ascot is most famous for its racing. The world tunes in every year to witness the decadence of Royal Week when the town comes alive in a flurry of ostrich feathers and top hats.
Yet, away from the races, Ascot is a warm and lively town with plenty of shops and restaurants. The centre offers everything from jazz bars to boutiques. It's the ideal place for a delicious meal on a summer's evening, or a quiet drink in a local pub.
The Local Area
In the local area there are excellent sporting and recreational facilities, with many well known local golf courses that include the world renowned Wentworth, polo at Smiths Lawn and The Royal Berkshire, with extensive walking and riding in Windsor Great Park.
There are many good state and independent schools such as Cheapside, Charters, Papplewick and two international schools; ACS at Egham and TASIS at Thorpe.
With direct rail links to London Waterloo in under an hour, and easily accessible M3, M4, and M25 motorways access is provided to both London Heathrow, London Gatwick airport and Central London.
History
Lying just six miles from Windsor Castle, Ascot was originally called East Cote, meaning 'Eastern Cottage'. Racing green: Like neighbouring Virginia Water and Sunningdale, Ascot is noted for its magnificent displays of trees and flowering shrubs and is home to Royal Ascot, arguably the most famous racecourse in the UK.
In 1845 a railway was opened in Ascot to serve the racecourse. Most commercial development in the town has grown up around the racecourse.
